Freshly Made Sketches: Trick or Treat

It's time for a new sketch at Freshly Made Sketches! Today we have a sketch by Linda and here’s what I did with it!

I'll be honest. I do not need another Halloween card (although I do have someone to give it to) but I was flipping through my stash and saw these three already-made pumpkins left over from a past project.  How could I possibly walk by a trio of pumpkins when the sketch has three circles on a hill?!!  

Given to whom it is going, I had to find a somewhat snarky sentiment. I have a shockingly large collection of boozy Halloween sentiments that could have worked but I didn't have a small enough beer mug or wine glass for these guys which was needed if I wanted to use the sentiment. (I'm very matchy-matchy that way.)  So I just went with a childhood classic sentiment although I will admit to being really bothered by the fact that pumpkins don't have feet to smell!

I added "wind" in the background then corrugated the ground to give it some interesting texture. I was thrilled to find a big moon in another set that also has stitching just like the pumpkins. It all came together easily and I'm thrilled those sweet little pumpkins found a place!

The Paper Players: Spooktacular Halloween

Just after last Halloween, I got a set of dies specifically for a card for my son and girlfriend. After a year, they were buried in the stash, so a big thank you to the challenge at The Paper Players as it helped me remember that I had the perfect Halloween costumes for the challenge and for my son, girlfriend AND their cat!

I found some Halloween paper that wasn't too somber and then added a starry sky and a big sentiment. Easy peasy! I love it when the real fun on the card is all about a great die set.

Freshly Made Sketches: Ghostly Cats 2

It's time for a new sketch at Freshly Made Sketches! Today we have a sketch by Amy and here’s what I did with it!

I have a work friend who is having a tough recovery from surgery. I've been sending her "feel better" type cards but she is a huge fan of Halloween and of cats - so even though I've stated I'm not a big Halloween card person, she needs one!

I used the same Poppystamps Ghostly Cats that I used here then surrounded them with a variety of older Halloween/autumns dies. I'm normally all about the fresh white card but the ghosts and colorful pumpkins and leaves needed to pop so I pulled out some Pebbled Path dsp and Lost Lagoon for a nighttime scene.

I know I've stated that I don't do Halloween cards but they are truly fun to do.  I need to find some new friends (or family!) that actually celebrate Halloween simply so I have a reason to make the cards! I hope to see you playing along with us at Freshly Made Sketches.

It's time for a new sketch at Freshly Made Sketches! Today we have a sketch by Karren and here’s what I did with it!

 

I swore I was done with ever making Halloween cards.  There is really no one in my life to send to. My adult sons just roll their eyes, my teenage nieces never really did Halloween and I don't have any obsessive friends.  And that was OK with me - I could just keep focusing on Thanksgiving and Christmas.  But now my oldest son has a serious girlfriend and she deeply appreciates anything that I send. Plus they just got a cat, plus the Ghostly Cats die from Poppystamps just came out. All of that was telling me that I wasn't done with Halloween cards after all!!

I was thrilled when I realized I had a pumpkin die in my stash that mimicked the tag in the sketch. Then I found some fun and feminine Halloween paper and plopped the pumpkin in a field of flowers. (I'll address it to both my son and the girlfriend but we all know the girlfriend trumps the son when I design a card for both of them.)  I am very limited in Halloween sentiment dies. I had wanted to put a longer sentiment on the diagonal but just couldn't fit what I had. I like how it ended up though when the "trick or trick" fit into the open space.

A Horde of Zombies!

Halloween is just not my favorite holiday. It's a long story involving memories of my childhood a very long time ago when times were simpler and Halloween at least seemed safe, then 30 years of my adult life on a 5-acre property without trick-or-treaters, then moving into town and totally looking forward to trick-or-treaters and the first young one tripping down the single step at my front door and screaming at the top of his lungs.  And that was the end of it! My only nod to Halloween is a garden flag with witch legs in my front yard and the purchase and eating of an entire bag of Mellowcreme pumpkins (which no matter they say, are different from candy corn!)

I took a couple of long weekends off of work as the weather cooled to do some cleaning and organizing. That sounds sad, but I actually adore the act of organizing.  My craft desk is included in the clean-up and one thing I decided was to get any Halloween products out of my not-yet-used stash. Then this will be the last year that I send any Halloween cards.  My sons really don't care and my nieces have never really done Halloween so a lack of Halloween cards won't be missed.

But I did have to use some zombie products I got from Impression Obsession before it all got stashed away.  They have a fabulous zombie edger die that I actually used for Valentines! See it here.  This year, I'm using their Zombie Sayings set along with a zombie (that I'm not seeing in their store, but maybe I'm missing it). I kept it all very simple - because my husband and adult sons don't like lots of stuff on their cards - but how wonderful are these sayings???

I don't usually do Halloween for my husband, but the "Back in my day..." sentiment was too perfect for him.  My youngest son and his phone was also an inspiration for the first card.  The other sentiment that I wanted to use from the sentiment set was "When life closes a door it opens a window. Then zombies climb in and eat you" but for my oldest son who struggled to find a job and whose life is just starting to come together, I just didn't want to burden him with zombies crawling in his window!!!  So "keep calm" just seemed better.

I may not love Halloween but those were fun cards to make!!

Freshly Made Sketches: Playful Pumpkins

This fairly new set from Concord & 9th has both fun stamps (and dies to cut those stamps) and also some stand-alone dies. Last week, at the last minute, I needed a few leaves and flowers so pulled just those out of the set (since it had just arrived in the mail and was still sitting on my desk). But right then, I put this card together.  I couldn't just pull a few leaves and flowers when all of these fun little pumpkins and sentiments were waiting to be used! I don't make a lot of Halloween cards - really just my two older teenage nieces and probably my son's girlfriend.  So the cards can be cute but not too young - I thought these jack-lanterns were just perfect.

Freshly Made Sketches: Trick or Drink

On my last post, I talked about Halloween cards for the older "children" in my life.  This is another example of finding a product that would work for my sons in their 20s!  It uses a stamp set and die set from Trinity Stamps. This is my second card with the first card also made for Freshly Made Sketches.  Funny story though - both of these cards involve drinking but my two sons think that I'm the drinker in the family.  You don't know me - so it's probably not immediately funny - until you realize that a half glass of wine puts me to sleep!!  I never actually get drunk because I'm asleep before then!!  But one time we were at a local Mexican restaurant and I had a margarita - not even a giant schooner full - a small water glass size.  I'd had it dozens of times, but I would swear they double-poured, because I got giggly and I had to seriously focus to walk a straight line.  My teenage sons had never witnessed that before, so now I have a reputation that I may never live down.  Of course, when my oldest turned 21, we took him for the same margarita - and he also got giggly.  So not only do I have a bad reputation, but my son is horrified that I passed along the giggly/sleepy drunk gene!!

If you follow me regularly, you might be surprised by the sheer amount of typing on this post.  I am still in my cast, but I found an ergonomic keyboard that allows my hand to be at an angle that works!  I just keep figuring out ways to accommodate the wrist and the bankle - I'll be an expert but probably about the time they come off!

Dancing Witches on Halloween

I don't have a lot of Halloween products and most of what I have dates back to when kids were young (they are in their 20s now). The only Halloween cards that I make these days are for those sons and for my high-school age nieces - all of whom probably roll their eyes when they get them but I enjoy making them so they'll just have to deal with it.  However, I have done a bit of shopping so as not to be overly cutesy with my older products.  For my nieces, I got the Six Witches die from Impression Obsessions then used five of them on these cards. 

I also got this paper from Catherine Pooler specifically for these cards (the floral is fabulous!!)

I decided to do  the same but different on the second card. It uses the same patterned paper pad, but I thought the paper with the little diamonds could be a night sky. So I added a big sparkly moon and two of the bigger witches.  Then I had some space to fill so found a die with little bats.

The sentiments are from an ancient Hero Arts but it's basic Halloween sentiments and will stay in my stash forever.

Freshly Made Sketches: You've Been Boozed

I have two sons in their 20s so how perfect is this set?!!  It's an older set from Trinity Stamps that I picked up after last Halloween and it may be my go-to set for them over the next few years!

I am trying to do this with a broken wrist and a broken ankle (details on last post). Ugh. It's been two weeks. I just got a full-cast on the arm which is helping with the pain so I thought I'd try cardmaking (I needed time in my happy place!)  I already had the pieces for this one cut out and I was hoping my casted right arm could still use tweezers to pick up the pieces and adhere them. Turns out the arm's not even up to tweezers yet but I took it slowly with my completely incompetent left hand and I have a finished card!

I also can only type one-handed so that's all the words for today!!

Freshly Made Sketches: Boo

It's time for a new sketch at Freshly Made Sketches! Today we have a sketch by Jen Mitchell and here’s what I did with it!

I just got a package of fabulous new products from Poppystamps and it was still out on my craft desk when I looked at this week's FMS sketch. The combination of dies and sketch worked perfectly and for me, this was a rare card that came together quickly and easily!

I found some fun paper way in the back of my stash. Then I used all the dies from Halloween Assemblage and the fun Boo Poe Script die to fill each area. To keep it fresh, I cut the dies in white to pop from the patterns, then added a few hints of glitter paper. You can see that I popped a couple of the dies, and I also layered up the sparkly Boo with three layers behind it.

I had such a great time putting this together that I went ahead with it even knowing that I have no idea to whom I would send it! My sons in their 20s would not appreciate the cuteness - nor would my teenage nieces (in fact, I'm thinking that they hate "cute" more than my sons because they are trying to so hard to be grown up).  My friends are all my age with grown children (and no grandbabies yet). My work friends either have grown children or other friends are younger and haven't started families.  There are literally no children in my life! It really takes some of the fun out of making cards.  Maybe this is all a reason to make even more Halloween cards and donate them? But I've never seen any group calling for Halloween cards.  Oh well - it was fun!!

A Zombie Valentine?!

I saw the zombie stamps and zombie dies from Impression Obsession before Halloween but I had a tough time finding them in stock. I recently got them and as I was getting ready to tuck them into my Halloween stash, it occurred to me that I could make zombies work for Valentines, specifically Valentines for my 21+ year old sons. I think it works!!

The Zombie Sayings set is fabulous - there's no doubt that I'll end up using every stamp in the set!  This is the Zombie Edger die, I also got a zombie stamp to change it up a bit. One zombie had to be holding a heart to make it right for Valentines and I found an older die in my stash. Some grungy paper in the background and some black/white accents - and it's just right!

I'm not sure what else to say on this card.  It's not my normal and it's definitely going to stand out from all the other Valentine cards on social media.  But it's perfect for what I needed!!

Addicted to CAS: Hip Haunts

I needed Halloween cards for my 21- and 25-year old sons and the Spooky challenge at Addicted to CAS pushed me into getting them done. I recently did two pink(!) ghost cards for my nieces, and I thought I'd turn to the dark, spooky side for my sons but the cards turned out a bit more on the cute side. Since they are CAS, I'm still crediting Addicted to CAS for my inspiration! (Maybe the spider in the corner works for "spooky"!!)

These are the Hip Haunts dies from Sizzix/Tim Holtz.  I love the detail in his dies but I may need to start just admiring them instead of buying and working with them - between older hands and older eyes, they are tough to work with. SO many bitty pieces to line up but that's also what gives them their charm!

I am particularly in love with the cat because I modified him to have the look of one of our cats.  Check out the actual cat being "abused" by my youngest!  (They are actually great friends - my son was just demonstrating how tolerant the cat is.) I added black ears, nose and tail to my cat die to make it obvious it was this cat!

The mummy is cute too. There are four characters in the die set then a die that cuts all kinds of disguises - different mustaches and sunglasses and more.

The inside sentiment is my favorite part.  I didn't see this stamp last year, but with both kids on college campuses that still have some mask mandates - this stamp by Stampendous still seemed just right!

Freshly Made Sketches: EEK

It's time for a new sketch at Freshly Made Sketches! Today we have a sketch by Amy and here’s what I did with it!

 

You might notice that I used exactly the same products as I used for last week's card. I got the Ghost set by The Stamp Market along with their Hocus Pocus paper specifically for my two nieces. Last week's card used the little ghost and different papers. This week is the big shaker ghost! Two cards - just perfect for two nieces!

The shaker is inspired by The Stamp Market samples. I loved the look of cardstock confetti that they used - it seemed softer somehow. So I punched a number of circles and threw in a few sequins. Then I pulled a variety of patterned papers from their Hocus Pocus set.  Even the sentiment is cut from a piece of patterned paper full of sentiments.

I have just a couple more Halloween cards to make but they are for my 21- and 25-year old sons so definitely no cute ghosts nor pink papers.  I'm thinking zombies....

Freshly Made Sketches: Garden Ghost

It's time for a new sketch at Freshly Made Sketches! Today we have a sketch by Narelle and here’s what I did with it!

I fell hard for the Halloween release at The Stamp Market especially the Ghost set. This little ghost actually has big brother who is a shaker! I also love the Hocus Pocus patterned paper in the release because it was in softer colors than the typical Halloween paper. With the little tag that had the fence-looking border, I decided to use the floral paper with it - thus the "garden ghost"!

I set out to use the circles as in the sketch but in the patterned paper pack was a sheet of pre-printed tags.  That's where the green tag with the fence-looking border came from.  I dolled it up a little by backing it with cardstock and adding a tag reinforcer.  There wasn't a pre-printed tag with the flowers but it seemed right with the garden "fence" so I used the green tag as a guide and cut a tag out of the flower paper.

I cut my little ghost out of glitter paper.  This is intended for one of my nieces and it definitely needed sparkle and sequins. Finally I added a swirly background because it may be a garden - but it's still Halloween!

Color Throwdown: Together in Spirit

 I don't do many Halloween cards.  I just don't have people who appreciate them.  Therefore, I haven't bought Halloween products in years.  But I made an exception this year.  I got the Trinity Stamps Slimline Boos stamp set.  Can you guess why?

The set comes with a mask!!!  I LOVE IT!!!  Then when I saw the way that end ghost was looking at the smiling ghost - he needed the mask.  One of my sons will definitely appreciate this!

The stamp is a full slimline.  I could not find my big Misti to stamp with.  I have everything in my craft room - and it's fairly well-organized.  Where would a Misti in a pink box disappear to?  So I really had no way to to get a good stamped image.  To hide the worst of my problem areas, I put the image behind this trio of squares. I ended up liking the way they are peeking out even though there are dozens of funny little ghosts you can't see.

I had not planned on working on this card this weekend, but the colors at Color Throwdown were just right.  It really hadn't occurred to me to use kraft but how perfect for my sons!

On a sad side note - I've talked about the fires in Colorado.  They don't get much coverage because they are dwarfed by the fires on the west coast but they are still burning.  A month or so ago, one of the fires became the largest in Colorado history - that fire is now out.  But another fire that is just above Fort Collins (where my son is at Colorado State University) has now beaten that record.  It's dwarfed the earlier fire by almost 50% again and it's not out.  Plus there are high winds and no moisture in the forecast.

And in the foreground of this shot is the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park. (Those are the lights from the hotel, not fire.) It's a beautiful hotel, but have you seen The Shining - this is where it was filmed and is still considered haunted! It couldn't look any more haunted than it looks right now.

Fort Collins is very close to the fire. The maps of the burn areas and the evacuation zones are horrifyingly close.  But there's a very big reservoir and no trees between the fire and the town so other than being engulfed in smoke for the last two months and perhaps the next few, it should be OK.  But there are other towns that aren't so protected - so sending up prayers.

Even crazier, new fires started today.  Towns are being evacuated.  We haven't had any storms - so they aren't caused by lightning.  There is supposedly no old, unsafe electrical equipment in the area (as with some of the California fires).  So these must be human-caused. Don't even get me started on the idiot in my own neighborhood shooting off fireworks last night.

2020 needs to be over.

I'm on the Poppystamps blog today with this fun peek-a-boo card!

I love the expressions on this trio of Squeaker Ghosts from Poppystamps!  I used the Haunting Pumpkins to give them something to play peek-a-boo with.  I don't have a "peek-a-boo" sentiment but Poppystamps has this small alphabet so I could create my own. Then I added some detail on the black panel with a frilly cobweb from Halloween Ingredients.

Poppystamps: A Whittle Boo

I am on the Poppystamps blog today with a Whittle Halloween card.  Full details are there; here's a peek.

I have used the cute Whittle animals (and sentiments) from Poppystamps so many times now I think my love of the Whittles is clear.  I don't typically do many Halloween cards. My sons just roll their eyes and my nieces have never really focused on the holiday and most definitely don't like the scary aspects of it. But when the Whittle Monsters came out, I thought I could use them on a cute and cheerful card that would work for one of my nieces.

The odd things about this card is the background, but it's only odd if you know that it is part of the Poppystamps Christmas release - not Halloween.  It's the Lamplight Pathway die. I do envision a Christmas card with some trees in the background, some deer in the light and some soft snow - but it actually works quite well for Halloween.  The sun is setting, the street lights have just come on, and a cute little parade of monsters is coming down the street to say "boo"!

Taylored Expressions Sneak Peek 3: Zombies, Spiders and Cats

It's day 3 of sneak peeks for the August release from Taylored Expressions.  Today is all about Halloween!  Everything you see today will be available on Thursday, August 8th. Be sure to check out each of the create team members' blogs for all of the sneak peeks - starting with the Taylored Expressions blog.

There are so many fun new Halloween products. To set the scene on this card, I used a great new web border with a few spiders from Flip the Web. The sentiment is also from that set.  (The set also has a giant corner web and two other sentiments). I brushed on a bit of Plum Punch and some sprinkles of Oreo Liquid Watercolors for the spooky sky.  It's the perfect setting for this charming little zombie from a set appropriately called Zombies with his two zombie cats.


You might ask why two cats?  Because this card is intended for my son on his first year far away at college and those two cats are colored to match the family cats (which of course implies that he's the zombie, but oh well!).


The set also has a great female zombie so you can make it match your own family!!

I'm very excited to say we have a new Gatefold Reveal die - it's Gatefold Reveal 2.  It has a bigger window that the first one so you can add full images!  I used the cat from the brand new Sweet & Spooky set.  Here's the inside of the card with the image fully revealed.  (The sentiment is from the older Boo to You set.)


With all the fun on the inside, I wanted to step up the outside.  I'm a very simple crafter so I was thrilled when I figured out that the previously released Haunted Cutting Plate splits down the middle almost perfectly to easily decorate the two sides of the gatefold!!  I cut the bottom section in half - then snipped the top border leaving just a few branches to spread across the card.


I gave those branches a little strength by tucking in a Double-ended Flag banner (with one of the ends cut off) using White Fine Detail embossing powder to add a sentiment from the new Handlettered Halloween.

I love that this card came together quickly and easily with all of the fabulous dies - yet is so fun and interactive.
