Atlantic Hearts Sketch: Thank You

My friend and Stampin' Up demonstrator gave me a wonderful Christmas gift - the Enduring Beauty stamp set along with stencils and dies! So the first thing that I had to do was make her a thank you card. A big thank you to the team at Atlantic Hearts Sketch Challenge for giving me the creative idea of splitting the bouquet of flowers into each corner.

Enduring Beauty set

I don't do a lot of stenciling probably because I find it very stressful. Adding the first color is OK but my anxiety level grows with each new stencil. What if it slips and all my previous work is ruined?! Then I can't tell you how carefully I line up the die and obsessively tape it down before I cut it out. This one really peaked my anxiety because then I had to cut it in half to fit each corner. My friend and SU lady loves stenciling so she'll never understand the stress that this card caused me.

Funny story. She's been my "dealer" for 25 years. For many of those years, we would meet up in my church parking lot when she had an order to give me. One time, her husband was along and as we were exchanging the order and the payment, he burst out laughing and said he was SO glad he knew what was going on. Think about it. An empty parking lot. One car window opens and hands an envelope to the other car. Then the second car hands over a large bag. Wouldn't it have been hysterical had the police shown up thinking they were taking down an illicit deal?!

I went all Stampin' Up for this card although some of the supplies are long retired.

A big thank you to the team at the Atlantic Hearts Sketch Challenge for the inspiration.

Sunday Stamps: Paper Posy Thank You

I saw the gorgeous colors at Sunday Stamps and just had to play along. I love the corals and blues, and especially the two rich colors as accents.

Sunday Stamps: Paper Posy Thank You

I needed a thank you card this week and I already had a plan of using this new-to-me floral die set. I absolutely love the variety of flowers and especially the embossed detail.  My card uses just a handful of the options and I'm looking forward to using all of them.  It's from Concord & 9th and I have a number of bold sentiments from them to balance the flowers so for this one, I found a "thank you".

I had all of this sitting on my desk but just hadn't quite figured out what to do with it all until I saw the color challenge. Not only did I use the colors but I clearly was inspired by the big image! A big thank you to Sunday Stamps for the inspiration!

Freshly Made Sketches: Thanks Berry Much

It's time for a new sketch at Freshly Made Sketches! Today we have a sketch by Michele and here’s what I did with it!

Thank you BERRY much

I actually made this a few weeks back (a big thank you to Michele for having her sketch ready for the design team early!) I tell you that because I'm sure you are getting tired of stories of my trip to Michigan but this is another card related to that trip.  I wanted something to give to my son and his girlfriend on the last day of the trip to say thank you. Sarah (my son's girlfriend) likes strawberries so I found a strawberry stem in my die collection to match the sketch. I wanted to do something fun with the sentiment to mirror the sketch but I just had to go punny and used the only Thank You Berry Much that I could find.

I hope to see you playing along with us at Freshly Made Sketches!

Freshly Made Sketches: Oh Thank You

It's time for a new sketch at Freshly Made Sketches! Today we have a sketch by Karren and here’s what I did with it!

 Oh Thank You

I had two requirements for making a card this week - it had to be a thank you and it had to include a cat. My son and his girlfriend took so much time away from their beloved Bucket while showing us around Michigan that I figured I had to send a thank you directly to the cat thanking him for sharing his parents with us.  He's a beautiful cat with a gorgeous coat that's kind of gray, kind of tannish but where most cats have white, his is beige. Here's a pic that shows his coat even though he's looking at the camera upside down while hanging off the edge of the bed.

I kind of forced my needs into the sketch.  I found a round thank you then found a kitty that could be standing next to it. Since Bucket's a boy, it had to be slightly masculine, but since I'm really doing it for Sarah, my son's girlfriend, I picked paper with a hint of pink and yellow too.

The brick was inspired in a completely different way.  Just the plain blue was not enough so I started playing with my usual polka dots, etc. but they didn't have a "rugged" look to match the look of the paper. Then I was remembering and smiling at the fact that Andrew and Sarah shared that they regularly had "Zillow-time" together. They have a plan for their future and browsing Zillow looking for what/where their dream house could be is an important step. For some reason, that was in my head and out popped the brick embossing folder looking just like the side of a house!!

I hope to see you playing along with us this week at Freshly Made Sketches.

Freshly Made Sketches: Hey Lovely Bloom

It's time for a new sketch at Freshly Made Sketches! Today we have a sketch by Linda and here’s what I did with it!

Thank You Blooms

I just got the flower die from The Stamp Market and then we have a sketch that has a big enough open space for me to use it. It was definitely meant to be! I found the paper and then mirrored the colors in my flowers.  Yes, I know one stem of flowers does not have multiple colors. (That's the first thing my husband noticed, bless his heart!)  It's a gorgeous die.  I definitely have more flowers than I'll ever use but then one comes along that calls my name and ends up in my stash. I love the tall stem, but there's also basic leaves in the set so you could use those flowers individually with just a small leaf or two for each one.

I don't use many thank you cards but really should. This became a thank you card just because I loved the sentiment on it. It has a nice shape and it was bold enough to hold its own with the big gorgeous stem of flowers.

I hope to see you playing along with us this week at Freshly Made Sketches.

Freshly Made Sketches: Crocus Thank You

It's time for a new sketch at Freshly Made Sketches! Today we have a sketch by Jacquie and here’s what I did with it!

 Crocus Thank You

I used the Etched Crocus Stems from Simon Says and I apologize to flower lovers. I googled and I know that crocuses are virtually always purple but I already had all of the blue papers cut and I didn't think the purple popped liked I wanted it to. Since I don't know flowers - this looked perfectly fine to me!!  I just needed a fresh and sweet card so used some favorite colors.

I'm still in the midst of reorganizing with both of my adult sons coming home temporarily(!!??) in just a few weeks (see prior posts).  I really had planned to get the guest room re-done, this is just rushing it. (My oldest son gets the guest room. We moved after he left so he's never had a room in this house).  The big problem is that guest room had become my overflow storage.  So the boxes of knitting supplies in that room have now come into my craft room (there's a certain logic to crafts being stored in a craft room!) but that also means boxes of card-making supplies are getting weeded out. But there's so much more overflow in that room, including a piano (try finding space for a piano, even temporarily!)  I actually enjoy the act of organizing but this is breaking my brain!!

I hope to see you playing along with us at Freshly Made Sketches!

Freshly Made Sketches: Serene Bird

It's time for a new sketch at Freshly Made Sketches! Today we have a sketch by Jen Timko and here’s what I did with it!

 Memory Box Serene Bird

I always have a basket on the corner of my desk that's filled with products appropriate for any upcoming holiday or just new stash that I want to be sure to use. Over the weekend, I finally changed out the Christmas products for Valentines. This bird die was part of the holiday release at Memory Box but I didn't get a chance to use it for this Christmas.  I think it's lovely so before it left my desk I decided to give it a try on a non-Christmas card.

Memory Box Serene Bird

I cut him out from a golden-yellow and added two of the branches. I added a small white frame behind him then decided that rays of sunshine were perfect for him. The sentiment is also from Memory Box (Open Studio).  I spend a lot of time picking the sentiment because it had to be in that shape to fit with the branches but I also loved how this card was all coming together so the sentiment needed to be something I'd be sure to use (vs. going into my stash of cards to maybe be used in the future.)  (Yes...I definitely obsess over my sentiments!!!)

I hope to see you playing along with us at Freshly Made Sketches.

Freshly Made Sketches: Hummingbird Thanks

It's time for a new sketch at Freshly Made Sketches! Today we have a sketch by Jen Brum and here’s what I did with it!

6.16.21 FMS side

On the day that I was making my FMS card, we had plans to visit friends that evening whom we had really not spent any time with since the shutdown started. They have a beautiful lush backyard that is just a joy to relax in.  It's full of birdsong and also the hum of hummingbirds. I wanted to thank them for their hospitality and I had finally gotten this new set from Concord & 9th - so all of this came together perfectly with the sketch!!

6.16.21 FMS

Even with all of the colors I could have used with a card full of flowers and hummingbirds - I decided to go with only two colors and add interest with various patterns. I pulled out a stack of Doodlebug 6x6 paper pads, decided on the colors, then pulled out all of the patterns that I had.

The die set is fairly new from Concord & 9th.  I didn't get it in the first day or two after it was released then it went out of stock everywhere.  It took forever to get it back.  I ordered from an online store the moment it was back in stock but then it still took weeks to ship. It is a beautiful set. Each of those pieces have their own die and fit perfectly together so it's very easy to build.  Plus there's a second hummingbird with a different shape and looking the other way.  I'm going to love playing with the hummingbirds!

I hope to see you playing along with us this week at Freshly Made Sketches.

The Card Concept: Garden Pleasures

There’s a new inspiration challenge at The Card Concept and the theme is Garden Pleasures.

The little house in the center of the photo looked exactly like a beehive in a stamp set that I love.  My Clean and Layered card uses that beehive (and the gorgeous bee in the same set) on a little green table surrounded by the same color flowers (even to the brown centers) as is in the inspiration.

5.12.21 Card Concept

Everything except the little table is by Stampin' Up.  (I had a die for the little table so I used it but it would be just as easy to hand cut the pieces).  I adore that bee - he's absolutely stunning.  The beehive looked exactly like the center house in the inspiration - I even tried to match the color.  There's nothing unusual about yellow and purple flowers - just not my normal go-to colors - and that's why I love inspirations! They inspired (and challenge) me to try new things! Even the brown gems in the center were inspired by the photo.

5.12.21 Card Concept side

The sentiment was one of this year's Stampin' Up sale-a-bration sets.  I love the font. I don't have a lot of delicate scripty sentiments - I lean towards bold and unique

I hope to see you playing along with us this week at The Card Concept!

Poppystamps: Meadow Flowers on Lattice

It's my day to post over on the Poppystamps blog!!  And I am thrilled to announce that there is a new release for Valentines 2021.  It's mostly new Whittles (be still my heart!) but I have posted so many Whittles cards lately, I decided to go in a different direction.

1.4.21 Poppystamps Meadow Flowers on Lattice

The Lattice Plate is part of the new release.  I love dies like this. I'm typically a clean and simple cardmaker so you don't see a lot of patterned paper on my cards. Dies like this that just let the background peek through give me a clean look while allowing me to use beautiful patterned papers!

1.4.21 Poppystamps Meadow Flowers on Lattice

I paired the new Lattice Plate die with the older Meadow Flower and a sparkly butterfly. I put the sentiment on a right red label so it would pop. There are many more details on the Poppystamps blog - be sure to check it out. Then pop over to the store and check out the new Whittles!

Happy 2021!!

Inspired by...Sweet Sentiments

I saw the challenge at Inspired By and knew it was meant to be.  I had spent quite a bit of time over the long weekend organizing my craft room.  Some of my stamp drawers were overflowing (surprised?!)  So I made a number of hard decisions regarding stamp sets that were going on a higher shelf. One of the sets out of my Stampin' Up drawer was an older set called Apple of My Eye.  I love the simple bold images so, although I knew I would never use it enough to keep it in the easy-to-get-to drawer, I also wanted to use it one more time.  And then what do I see? The perfect challenge!

Inspired by Tasty

I know the theme is "autumn" and there is no autumn in my card.  But I did get to play with yellow and black - and pears and apples - right from the graphic.  Wouldn't it be fun to have seasonal decor?  I used to do a lot of seasonal decorating - although not so far as my main wall art.  My boys just rolled their eyes so it started to seem like a lot of work (mostly to pack it all away after each holiday/season). Now I stick to the mantle, a few things on the built-ins in my living room, placemats and the garden flag out front (with a whole lot more for Christmas).

A Colorado fire update. If you read yesterday's post, you'll see that we got snow. (We broke 7+ weather records in the last few days - including heat, snow and a 70 degree temperature drop).  The snow definitely helped our firefighters because the fires slowed down for a few days and they were able to get ahead.  The most worrisome fire right now isn't out by a long shot. And the weather is going right back to the mid-80s by this coming weekend. It's above Fort Collins (where my son goes to Colorado State).  On Monday, he reported he could make footprints in the ash and pine needles raining from the sky. They say the fire would run out of fuel so Fort Collins isn't in danger; however, here is the lake on the outskirts of town at 1:30 in the afternoon on Monday.

I am in awe of the firefighters.  If this is what it is like miles away, can you even imagine being on the front line?  And this particular fire is described as extremely unpredictable and dangerous.   The firefighters had been using the Colorado State Mountain Campus and my family's beloved Sky Ranch Lutheran Camp to rest, shower and eat - supposedly to take a break.  But during their "breaks" they were cutting back trees and filling water bladders to try to save some of the historic buildings.  Over the weekend, this fire jumped the only road into those locations. I haven't heard differently so I presume the firefighters are all out but that leaves these locations surrounded and defenseless even after all of the firefighters' hard work.  It's obvious these firefighters are brave, but the emotional toll on them is unimaginable.  I'm thanking God for their strength and sending prayers for their well-being.

The Paper Players: Beautiful Bouquet

For reasons I cannot explain, I waited until Stampin' Up's Beautiful Bouquet and the dies were retiring to get them.  They have been at the top of my wishlist for the last few years, but there were always other things to get.  When I saw the cheerful colors at The Paper Players, I figured this would be a good time to try them for the first time.  They are wonderful!!

TPP Beautiful Bouquet

This card is going out to my Stampin' Up "dealer" - our husbands use that particular word and always with a hint of annoyance!!  I had just received my massive order of retiring products when she called and said she had new catalogs.  We spent an hour and a half  yesterday going page-by-page!  She also brought presents - two of which are the punch and wooden elements I used on this card.  The bouquet and the embossing folder were in my recent order.

Taylored Expressions Blender Brushes: Soft to Bold

I was a huge fan of the wonderful (and very colorful) Taylored Expressions Blender Brushes when they first came out and my love for them continues to grow.  They are one of the few things that are always out on my desk - I reach for them over and over.

The two things that I love most about them are my ability to add color without getting a hard edge like I always get with sponges - and that color can be added at any intensity that you like.  I love brushing just a hint of blue sky behind my scenes - almost too little to see it, but just enough to make my stamped images and die-cuts pop.

This card isn't quite that subtle - but check out the softly colored striped panel.

Taylored Expressions Blender Rainbows

I cut a narrow panel and very lightly brushed on that rainbow of color.  I did trim the edge off before I adhered - the edge always gets just a big darker as your brush goes on and off the paper and I didn't want that on this card.

Taylored Expressions Blender Rainbows

I thought the look was just perfect for a sweet sentiment.

Now for the amazing part.

Believe it or now, this next card uses exactly the same ink colors for the rainbow!!

Taylored Expressions Blender Rainbows

I have so much control with these brushes, I can achieve totally different looks!!

Taylored Expressions Blender Rainbows

The style of this Rain or Shine sentiment set is at the top of my favorite list, so I am always looking for a chance to use it. A rainbow of color seemed like the perfect chance.  Then I just added a simple, colorful umbrella and a few raindrops.

Here they are together - the same colors!!  I LOVE it!!

Taylored Expressions Sneak Peek 1: Handlettered

It's day 1 of sneak peeks for the August release from Taylored Expressions.  It's the start of my favorite crafting season - autumn!!  We have so much to show you this week for Halloween and Thanksgiving - but there are also additions to some of your favorite lines of stamps and dies.  We're starting with those today.  Everything you see today will be available on Thursday, August 8th. Be sure to check out each of the create team members' blogs for all of the sneak peeks - starting with the Taylored Expressions blog.

Already in the Handlettered series of stamps we have 4th of July, Baby, Easter and Holiday, and today we are adding the perfect basic set simply called Handlettered Sentiments which includes all those sentiments you need for everyday occasions.  We also have an addition in this release to the Layer It series of dies with Layer It - Rustic Florals.  Here's how I put the two of them together.

TE 1 flat

I kept the flowers very subtle by simply sponging the top layer with Versamark. It keeps it the same color but just slightly darker.  Then I brushed soft blue on the background and added some white sprinkles to keep the soft look.  Handlettered Sentiments has coordinating dies so I could die cut my sentiment and have it really pop.

TE 1

I love these sentiments.  It's a beautiful font and can take center stage on the card.  Keep scrolling to see a second card using another of the sentiments.

I also used Handlettered Sentiments on this card but with a totally different look.  I changed the colors - then I added just a bit of the new Shiplap Background to give it a more rustic look.

TE 2

I plopped on some butterflies in bright colors that really pop on the Toffee. Three of them fluttering around that beautiful sentiment with a bit of shiplap in the background - that's all you need!!

TE 2 flat

Be sure to come back tomorrow - I have two Thanksgiving cards and another general card full of smiles!  And there are also additions to a very popular series...hint...hint!!

Freshly Made Sketches: Thank Ewe

It's time for a new sketch at Freshly Made Sketches! Today we have a sketch by Jen Mitchell.

I recently spontaneously purchased a stamp.  I'm very deliberately not "spontaneous" these days. I used to be - but the sheer volume in my craft room shows the results of those days. So I've had a rule for the last few years that I put something in my wishlist and if I'm still in love with it in a month or two - then I buy.  It's amazing how many things drop off my radar and never get purchased.  Consequently, only those things that I truly love find a home in my stash.  It works.  But a few weeks ago, I was due to work in about 1/2 hour, enjoying my last sips of coffee - and I saw this post for Simon Says Stamp.  I fell hard for the Tim Holtz Funny Farm stamp set (BTW - Jo's blog has many more samples).  I also fell for the Wildflower card immediately above it.  Within five minutes, I had both items in my cart and on the way to me!!!

Here's the Funny Farm...

FMS Thank Ewe

I figure it was meant to be.  My oldest son came down from college a few weeks for my belated birthday celebration.  His gift to me was a beer or two (or more) at the neighborhood brewery.  And more importantly - he was my designated driver!  Obviously that required a thank you.  How perfect is this set going to be for me for many situations over the years as I'm surrounded by males.  Not that it's just a masculine set - but it works perfectly and it has a bit of fun to it without being cutesy.

FMS Thank You Close

I found an old paper pack that had just the right colors and then used those colors to do some limited coloring on the image (totally inspired by Jo (link above)).  I am thrilled with everything about this.  I'm still tickled by those images (no buyers-regret at all!). And the fun sketch added just the right amount of detail for a card for my son!  Hope to see you playing along this week.

Taylored Expressions Sneak Peek 2: A Bright World

It's day 2 of sneak peeks for the February release from Taylored Expressions.  Today I'm sharing kindness and I am rejoicing!  Everything you see this week will be available on Thursday, February 7th. Be sure to check out each of the creative team members' blogs for all of the sneak peeks - starting with the Taylored Expressions blog.

I love the words "kind" and "kindness".  I don't think we use them enough (nor probably even display it enough.)  So I was thrilled with the new Kindness Script and Kindness Script Backer along with the coordinating sentiments in Plant Kindness.

Taylored Expressions Kindness

The sentiments in the set are all beautiful, but I sincerely believe that kindness "brightens the world".  With the sentiment in mind, I paired it with the previously released Sunshine Cutting Plate, then added a rolling hill and some time tiny flowers.

Taylored Expressions Kindness

The other very exciting thing on this card is three new colors!!  Beautiful, subtle colors!  The ground is Spearmint which, if you follow my blog, was the second green I added on the yellow card on this set from the past weekend (it pairs beautifully with Mint Julep).  The pink flower is Raspberry Sorbet and the peach is Peaches n' Cream (you'll see more of these two colors as the week goes on).  The third flower and the sun is the previously released Pineapple and the blue that's just right with those colors is the previously released Gumball.

Here's the supply list for this card.  Keep reading because I have another sneak peek and a chance to win prizes!

Yesterday I had Easter bunnies; today it's the true meaning of Easter.

Taylored Expressions Third Day

I used the new Third Day Border on this card.  It's hard to see on the above photo, here you can see that the entire ground is part of the border die so I popped the whole thing up.

Taylored Expressions Third Day

Also new on this card are the new colors of liquid watercolors!!  I used Spearmint on the ground, a sunrise out of Raspberry Sorbet blending into Peaches n' Cream with a very watered down Cookie Monster (an older color) for the sky.  The cross is also new in Toffee!  I did cut a second cross and trimmed out the cloth to adhere so that the cloth would be white (I didn't have the skill to paint around it!)

The sentiment is the previously release Rejoice Script with the Rejoice Script Backer behind it in vellum.

Here's another way to use the new Third Day Border.  I did tone-on-tone for the inside, along with a sentiment from the brand new The Inside Scoop - Easter Blessings.

Taylored Expressions Third Day

I'm wishing I would have done more of these while I had everything out. Such a meaningful Easter card.  But I do have two more Christian Easter cards coming on Thursday so come on back.  I'll do a brief sidetrack tomorrow with some some very fun critters and cacti!
