Merry Monday and Wanna Sketch: Cascade of Ornaments

Yesterday I counted my Christmas cards and got a little nervous.  I thought I was further ahead, but apparently I am going to have to seriously focus over the next few weeks.  An important part of that focus is to go quick and easy. This card was not quick and easy - and I couldn't even tell you why.  New rule for me: stop obsessing.  I knew that I was playing along with the current Merry Monday challenge which was to use ornaments in silver/gray and blue.  I tried a dozen or more combinations of blues and didn't love any of them.  I also knew that I was using Lisa's Wanna Sketch.  These new ornaments were an easy choice - but choosing a sentiment took forever and I'm still not thrilled.   I wanted one with a little more "shape" so that I could tuck the ornaments around it.  Please tell me that I am not the only one who picks sentiments based on shape??!

Cascade of Ornaments

Here are the details on the ornaments.  This was the one happy mistake on the card.  I stamped the blue, then used my anti-static embossing buddy so that I could do the silver centers.  But the powder still stuck to the blue and I decided I liked it!

It was a very interesting day in my house yesterday.  My Facebook status update said...
Andrew just put together a big crockpot of cheeseburger soup to take to his school's dinner for veterans, and he will be playing the Star Spangled Banner on his trumpet. I am proud of him and of Lutheran High School for honoring our veterans.

Fifteen minutes later, I added this...
Edited: Sadly, this didn't end well. (Everybody is fine.) Andrew skidded on his way to school with the soup and went over a guard rail into the other lane. The Jeep did not survive, nor did the soup. Scott can't figure out how the Jeep stayed upright - this could have been much, much worse.
Andrew is fine - although sore everywhere this morning. The Jeep is totalled. Somehow, there were actually moments of comic relief.  The crockpot of soup exploded everywhere inside the Jeep.  It covered all the windows from the inside.  As it started to drip, the really bitter temperatures froze it into little soup icicles. As police cars and ambulances and tow trucks showed up, each of them had to go take a look at the odd sight of the inside of a card completely covered in soup icicles!  Given that the entire metro area was on accident alert, it was going to be a long night for all the rescue workers, so a little comic relief was probably welcome.

One sweet lady commented on my Facebook post, "Soup can be re-made, people can't!"  She is so right and that is how we are choosing to deal with this whole event. But it has been a wake-up call for me that the fears and concerns of parents don't end just because a child is soon to head out on his own.  You worry so much when they are little - but now I'm learning that although the worries change, they are still always with you.

The paper is from the BoBunny Woodland Winter 6x6 pad. It must be old because I cannot find it at any of my favorite stores. The cord is a long retired silver cord from Stampin' Up.

  1. I very often chose a sentiment by it's shape and how it works with the card so no worries, you are not alone :)

SO, so glad everyone was okay!! Nothing like that to bring fear into a mama's heart. HUGS!! I must admit I did have a giggle at the frozen soup icicles and as you so aptly put it, good to give some comic relief to the rescue crews on what was most likely a very long night. PS: Make sure he gets to a chiropractor a few times to get realigned :)

  4. So glad your son is OK. You think you worry when they are living under your roof, just wait till they're out on their own (when you can only imagine what they're getting into)! I've learned that you just have to keep yourself positive and BUSY or you will drive yourself crazy worrying!

  6. Beautiful card I love the flicker of silver over the blue <3 and that soft navy is a gorgeous colour. I so need to get more Christmas cards made as well. So busy trying to keep up with Soap and Candle orders that my card making has suffered some.

  7. I am glad to hear that Andrew is OK. Poor thing. LOVE the card you created. Those ornaments with the blue/silver are lovely. I am horrible with getting sentiments on my card. I tend to not have a ton of long ones because I don't know where to put them!!

  8. Love your card, Kim. I have trouble not only with shape but what sentiment to use in general. I often pick the sentiments stamp first.

So glad your son is okay. It's a scary thing to hear they've had an accident. (I speak from experience).

  9. I'm so glad your son is okay, Kim, even if the car and the soup aren't. I actually think it's even scarier and more worrisome when they get some independence than when they're younger. My son totalled his first car a week after getting his licence - luckily he was fine but it was a harsh lesson for him. As for your card, I love those ornaments and think the sentiment looks great.

  10. Goodness what a scare! I'm so glad that the only casualty was the soup and that you found a moment of lightness in what must have been a very scary time. Hugs to you and your family.

Oops, almost forgot to add that the shape of a sentiment is very important in my book! And I love that your happy accident with the embossing powder turned out to give your little ornaments a bit more pizzazz!

  12. These ornaments are GORGEOUS, Kim! I love the sprinkling of glitter! It takes me longer to choose a sentiment than the design. I'm so glad Andrew is OK! How scary! We never stop worrying about them. The older they get, the bigger the worries!

  13. Kim, your card is stunning and I think the sentiment you've selected pairs beautifully with the ornaments. Gorgeous card in every way. Reading about your son's special soup making and delivery had me smiling...and the next part nearly had me in tears. I'm glad to hear he's okay, and yes, the 'soup icicles' did provide a moment of comic relief. Although I worry and fret over the well-being of my niece and nephew, who are still very much 'little ones', I can only imagine what the concerns are when the children are your own...and they're growing up! Sending positive vibes to your entire family and a prayer of thanks that all turned out well.

  19. So glad your son is ok! I have a 16 year old who has his license and this will be his first winter driving and I am a bit nervous. You are right, the worries are still always with us no matter their age.

  21. My mom used to say... small children small worries... big children...
And I so agree! Our youngest daughter started her studies in the Netherlands in September... and not seeing her for so long and being so far away from home doesn't make the worries less... believe me.
I am just relieved your son is ok!
Anyway... I wanted to say I love your card (as always) . So beautiful!
