Slimline: Christmas Kickstart Starry, Starry Night

When I saw the challenge at Christmas Kickstart, Starry, Starry Night, I ran right to my local Hobby Lobby.  They had Sizzix on sale and I had seen this swirling star die (any excuse works, right?!)  I knew that I already had a variety of animals for this peaceful scene.  Everything is by Sizzix except the slimline frame from Honey Bee Stamps.

I like how this eventually came together but it took a few tries.  I cut the Swirling Stars and the Peace on Earth and was just planning a few animals, but it was very bland.  I was wishing I had done something different with the sentiment so it stood out more.  But after the effort to get it all lined up (the sentiment is on three different dies), I wasn't starting over.  I saw some greenery in one of the sets and it definitely helped the sentiment, but it needed more to balance it. So with all the layers of greenery this card became a little more involved than I normally like to do - so I only created one of them for my Christmas stash!  

Some of the animals are popped for some dimension.  Not too much because I didn't want to deal with layering that thin frame!

I do like the outcome and thanks so much to Christmas Kickstart for inspiring my shopping trip!

Slimline: Tic Tac Toe Mountain Scene

This might be a bit of a stretch for the Tic Tac Toe Challenge.  I am using the line for Mountain, Sunshine and Adventure.  On the surface I really didn't nail the "adventure" part.  But the challenge really helped me finish this card so I wanted to give a shout-out. When I saw the challenge, I had the mountain scene created but it was lacking something.  The "sunshine" in the Tic Tac Toe grid inspired me to focus on the sun even though my husband (whose birthday this is for) will make sarcastic comments about the sun spots (or sequins!)  The sun really filled in the space - and it "warmed" up the card.  I had been regretting doing it on white because it was so stark - but the sun and a few sequins sun spots made all the difference.

The fabulous products on this card are from Trinity Stamps (except for the fish, and I did freehand the ground and the water).  Although I have way too much of everything, I actually try to invest in multi-use products, so the rest of the slimline products that I have are basic frames, scalloped edges, etc.  This set does come with the wonky stitching (so I'm going to justify it as basic) but also the mountains and trees and clouds and so much more.  For a Colorado family that spends significant time in the Colorado Rockies, this was a must-have.  The Happy Birthday is also Trinity Stamps and is sized to fit across the slimline card but I couldn't cover my mountain scene!

So speaking of mountains and sunshine and adventure.  I know there isn't a specific adventure component on this card, but when you have to drive over this....(elevation 12,005)...

I must have done something right on this card because my husband has it displayed on his dresser. Most cards get opened and forgotten.

Slimline: Freshly Made Sketches A Lovely Day

It's time for a new sketch at Freshly Made Sketches! Today we have a sketch by Linda. She decided we were going to do slimline cards.  Funny story.  I've really liked the slimline cards I've been seeing so I invested in a variety of products specifically made for slimline cards.  Did I use a single one of my new products on today's card? Nope!  However, I have made a number of other cards with them, so I've decided it's "slimline week" on my blog. Check back for more!  (And I have played around in the past with my products. Here's a slimline happy birthday and a slimline Christmas.)

I started out regularly sending cards to my two nieces as they were stuck at home.  But then they found out that the entire family had had COVID over Christmas so, while they were still cautious, they did venture out of their homes and were no longer stir-crazy so I haven't sent cards in months. But as I was thinking through the idea of a row of thought bubbles (new from The Stamp Market), I saw that I had other stamps/dies from The Stamp Market that would make a very fun card for my tween niece. This little guy in black and white, surrounded by the yummy colors makes me smile - I hope it makes her smile too!

Have fun working on a slimline card! (Of course now you need new envelopes!!  #9 envelopes are just the right size - I got mine on Amazon. #10 envelopes are regular business size so just a bit bigger but some slimlines are a bit bigger so these would do double-duty.)

Fab Friday: Loving Thoughts

I let the Stampin' Up Sale-A-Bration set Thoughtful Blooms come and go, then after it went, I saw a number of cards that I fell in love with.  I loved when cardmakers stamped a large number of them and made a spray across the card.  Then I started seeing people use the different sized blooms with the same punch - such a fresh and clean look!  I recently found it on a retired sale and am thrilled to now own it.

My first card with the set does a spray across the card and uses the different sized blooms, just like I fell in love with.  I used the colors at Fab Friday because I wanted a bright and cheerful get well card. 

To make it even more cheerful, I added some gems in the middle of each flower.  The background is one of my favorite embossing folders - I adore the texture of the brick   The sentiment is a two-parter; the inside says "you'd be better already" and I added some of the small blooms around it so even the inside is cheerful!

The Color Throwdown: Hello There

I needed a bright and cheerful card but I needed it fast so I went to the Color Throwdown for inspiration and as luck would have it, the colors are definitely bright and cheerful.  Here's what I came up with...

I grabbed some new products from The Stamp Market that were already out on my desk. Their last release included the Thought Bubble die and the Hey Hi Hello There die.  Then I pulled out the Picked for You stamp set which I remembered using previously on a quick and easy card. I pulled this together in about 10 minutes.  Then I snapped a couple of pictures and ran to the mailbox. Of course, my always-at-1:00 mailman showed up at 5:30 pm yesterday but had I known he'd be late I would have spent an hour on this and probably wouldn't have liked it any better!!  More importantly, the card is on its way to a friend who needs a bright spot in her day.

The Paper Players: It's Time to Celebrate

It's definitely time to celebrate!!  The Paper Players is holding their 500th challenge!!!  I haven't played along with them since their beginning but here's my first Paper Players post on March 31, 2011 which is just a few months after I started my blog.  If you click to my first post, look at some of the comments - LeAnne Pugliese, Anne Schach, Ann Marie Hile, Jaydee - all still part of the team.  And also Nancy Leedy, administrator, and Lesley Croghan, creator. To you - and to the rest of the design team - thank you for the years of inspiration.

I don't think I've done a celebration card lately without pulling out the Pinwheel Party group of products from The Greetery. Originally I didn't get the Twisted Crepe die knowing I already had too many banners but I remedied that mistake recently.  Although I didn't do it here, it's fun because it has individual sections so you can add darker/lighter layers or different colors to clearly show the twist. 

I started with colored cardstock base and sponged on a darker color using the stencils.  The little sparkles came from the Pinwheel Party stamp set.  And did you notice that I splattered ink?!  I don't do that often because I really hate the lack of control.  But it worked this time!  I've been using Silks by Fun Stampers Journey.  They are packaged like finger nail polish so I can just tap on the applicator and I have splatters. Although a fun (or sad) story - A particularly big splatter showed through one of the openings on the large green pinwheel.  That's all I could see, so I actually pried up part of the pinwheel and slid a small piece of white paper under the hole.  That is utterly obsessive and so very controlling. Of course, now I can see which one it is because it's white, instead of sponged on blue - but I didn't sponge a scrap with blue and try again.  I think that's proof that I can "let go" - HA!

Freshly Made Sketches: Cloudy Day, Go Away

It's time for a new sketch at Freshly Made Sketches! Today we have a sketch by Jen Mitchell and here’s what I did with it!

This is definitely the kind of card many people need right now.  It seems like the "cloudy days" just keep coming. I feel quite blessed in that my husband and I are both still working - and most days, I get to do it from home in sweats!!  We are both homebodies so the opening and closing of shopping/restaurants doesn't impact us too greatly, although Amazon Prime loves me.  Our children are in college so we don't have the incredible anxiety of dealing with younger children out of school. I do have two orders of face masks coming because I've finally decided that this is going to be long-term and I need a stash.  Our grocery stores just began requiring masks and then our state did.

I hope your days aren't too cloudy and that you can see the sparkling rainbow at the end!

CAS Christmas Nativity: Blessed Christmas

I can't pass up a Christian Christmas challenge so I knew I would play along with the CAS Christmas Nativity Challenge. I have a lot of options in my stash but in keeping with the CAS part of the challenge, I pulled out the Taylored Expressions Nativity Cutting Plate so I would get lots of great detail with just one die.

Usually my nativity cards are elegant and subtle, but I didn't want to do subtle today - I wanted bright and bold. Temperatures above 90 make me feel tropical. When I thought of the Nativity Cutting Plate and saw that it included palm trees, I was certain I was going with bright colors.   I got the colors all sponged on and I decided not to do any of reactive techniques that Distress Oxides are so good at (splotches of water, etc.) because I loved the gradient of solid color.

Over It

My poor son sat on my sofa yesterday and declared he was "over it".  Covid (which BTW he had in January before it was a thing along with many, many other college kids), its impact on his on his college career, a school-owned apartment that is flooding but there are so few maintenance men working that it's been three times without being fixed, nor is anybody in housing to get him into a new apartment, and a car breakdown that has potential to be very expensive. "Adulting" is not going well for him.  He moved out of the apartment into a friend's house near our home (his school is 90 miles north). He emailed the school strongly recommending that they have someone check on the apartment daily until its fixed.  It will be interesting.

Anyway...I recently saw a post by Gayatri using unique and wonderful rainbow colors and this same die set and it got me thinking that I could pull out some masculine colors and do a very different sort of rainbow.


I had to use "over it" for the sentiment.  These letters are from Sizzix and they had just the right look.  I added some rain by TE in the background.

Edited: the car cost $630, the school is claiming they have their top people fixing the flooding but they aren't moving him, but the impact of a pandemic on his final year of school has yet to be seen.

52 Christmas Card Throwdown: All White

I was thinking that it was just too darn hot out to even think about Christmas cards, but then 52 Christmas Card Throwdown issued an All White Challenge which I absolutely had to do.  I cranked up the AC, stuck a fan in my craft room doorway to direct it all on me, and poured a big glass of peach iced tea - anything to cool off.  And I made an all white Christmas card!

This was fun to do!!  The Sizzix/Tim Holtz Funky Festive dies have dozens of options, so I pulled a few springs, berries, the layered poinsettia and finally the bow.  By only adhering the end of the sprigs, they pop a bit adding so much interest.  The "Noel" is from another Sizzix/Tim Holtz set - but it needed something interesting so I framed it with the Honeybee Stamps Polygon Thin Frames. Then before I adhered it all, I added just a hint of texture so that all of my smooth white die cuts really stood out. 

Doing this card almost made me forget that it was over 100 degrees outside!

Freshly Made Sketches: Sending Prayers

It's time for a new sketch at Freshly Made Sketches! Today we have a sketch by Jennifer Timko and here’s what I did with it!

I had a very specific purpose for this one.  A dear friend's husband has some chronic conditions that appear to be worsening.  He had testing done a few weeks ago and they get the results this Friday.  This card is all about her. She, of course, would want prayers for her husband and I do keep him in my prayers - but I wanted to send something that is clearly just for her. 

I love this detailed envelope - it's fairly new from Mama Elephant. The edges are separate dies which gives it so much detail.  It is already has the slit where the opening appears to be so you can slip in the greenery which is also part of the set. Once again, it's my favorite kind of die and card - the die adds lots of detail but it all comes together quickly and easily!

The Paper Players: Poppy Moments

The soft color challenge at The Paper Players caught my eye especially because I had recently decided that Stampin' Up's Seaside Spray was my favorite from that batch of In Colors and I needed to stock up before its retirement in a year. 

I have a workmate with a birthday this week.  I don't know her at all; the poor lady started just two weeks before we were all sent home to work.  I know she lives out of town on some acreage and I get the impression of a calm and simple life so this is what I came up with.

My first use of Smoky Slate was to stamp the sentiment and cut plain cardstock for the flower center but then I remembered that I had Smoky Slate embossing powder. I love the shine it adds - it's just a bit more celebratory! These dies will always be some of my favorites - the flower is wonderfully big and detailed - yet still very clean. I used vellum for the bottom layer to keep the softness of the colors. The sentiment just retired but I purchased it a few weeks ago from a retirement sale.  It was a bit of a happy accident. I had ordered a different set, but it was gone, so the seller asked if I wanted a substitute set.  I added this set and look - it's just right for my card!

On My Mind with Summer Sketches

Surprisingly, I have never seen nor played along with the Cupcake Inspirations challenge.  What a fun and creative challenge!  Now that I've found it, this week's challenge is to use Flowers with Pearls/Sequins. Here's what it inspired me to create.


I actually did try to model it after the inspiration photo although it's somewhat hard to tell.  I am not a pink fan, so I went with peachy tones.  Originally this card was an all-white front but it needed something more.  I remembered the silver cupcake wrappers in photo - I didn't want to go with silver, but I added gray stripes which I thought were reminiscent of the wrapper.  Now that I have my card and the inspiration side-by-side, the cupcake silver is more of a blue tone and my gray is more of a tan tone so it doesn't look at all alike - but I really was inspired!!  So a big thanks to the challenge!

52 Christmas Card Throwdown: Very Merry Deer

I wanted to play along with the 52 Christmas Card Throwdown this week.  It's a sketch with a round element and I definitely had dies in my not-yet-used stash that fit the ticket.  Here's what I came up with.

In retrospect, I probably should have done him in brown - he looks a look stark in white - but just imagine him covered in snow!  I also gave him a jaunty little bow-tie because he is definitely very merry.  His nose is glitter paper and his eyes are black mirror paper.

TGIF Challenges: A Little Note with Bold Flowers

I just couldn't miss playing along with the wonderful colors at TGIF Challenges. I went with one of my favorite Stampin' Up die sets (retired) that includes big flowers to show off the colors.

I love the dimension on these flowers and there are so many other layers that could be added. I kept it simple so the colors could be center stage.  The two sentiments are from a different Stampin' Up set but I thought they combined beautifully - and it let me me add a bit more of the Mango Melody.

It's funny how my tastes have changed over the years.  For years I would have said I was a Stampin' Up Regals colors person, but lately I'm all about the Brights!!  I love every one of them.  Now..if I ever become a Subtles person, that would be a dramatic change.

Freshly Made Sketches: Sending Hugs

It's time for a new sketch at Freshly Made Sketches! Today we have a sketch by Lee Ann and here’s what I did with it!

Each die from Pinkfresh Studio is actually part of a rectangle so I trimmed one side off.  This made them a bit smaller than the card front so I used a frame die from Simon Says to size it down but still stay in the spirit of the sketch.

After I settled on the dies, I felt like the card had the look of an envelope so I knew it needed a "sending you" type of sentiment. I ordered some Ink to Paper recently and I tucked in some clearance Papertrey Ink sets.  I got a couple "sending you" stamp sets for just a few dollars each that had the ending part of the "sending you..." sentiment but the die that actually had the "sending you" was no longer available. Clear as mud??  Anyway, I knew it wouldn't be hard to find dies in other brands so I just had to shop again and found a variety in different fonts.  This card called out for my new die in a dainty, swirly font!!

CAS on Friday Fusion: Hugs

First, the inspiration photo from Fusion Card Challenge caught my eye because in a recent order from The Stamp Market, I had tucked in a little die set full of fun, modern flowers.  I also liked the gingham in the challenge graphic.  I really wanted to do a cascade of flowers and the sketch at CAS on Friday seemed just right for that (plus some some space for the gingham!)


I used a thin and a thicker dimensional adhesive on different flowers to give it this look. The rest was easy!


This is one of those cards that just makes me happy.  It's not a work of art, nor anything unique but I love the fresh color palette that I pulled from the Fusion challenge and I love the way the CAS on Friday sketch led me to this cascade of flowers.  Thank you to both challenges!

The Color Throwdown: Bright Birthday Flowers

The colors at The Color Throwdown just screamed at me to use my Concord & 9th Wildflower Field set, but I kept ignoring the voice in my head because I did not want to use red ink on my brand new stamps. Red ink stains and I've never found a way to completely clean it. I'm not usually fussy about stained and messy stamps - but all the samples I had seen with the wildflowers were soft and sweet and that's why I wanted them. But I have to admit - they work in red!!

Plus I just had to play along with the colors because this is their 600th challenge - congrats to the team!

I've gotten a little carried away with ordering stamps and dies the last few months.  I am making so many cards; my blog just shows a handful of them.  So any stamp set that creates a great card with little effort has shown up in my mailbox.  This is one of them.  The layering is easy, because it's loose and doesn't need to perfectly match up. It creates an entire bouquet of cheerful flowers in just minutes.  The sentiment is not from the set. There are four nice sentiments but not a birthday and that is what I needed for this week.

52 Christmas Card Throwdown: Peace

The challenge at 52 Christmas Card Throwdown is to cluster elements and to use at least three embellishments.  Since my very favorite thing to do is little groups of elements, how could I not play along?!

I'm not 100% certain how an embellishment is defined.  For me, I figure it's not die cuts since I'm using them as the main image.  So I used an embossing folder, glitter (using heat 'n stick on the gray frame), wooden accents, tinsel ribbon, a star sequin and Studio Katia Ice Sparkle Crystals - that's six!!

This is a fun little die set, although I think it might be retired.  It's the first snowglobe by Tim Holtz.  (I only see the second snowglobe on the website. I got the first on Amazon.)  Living in Colorado, I had to have the little mountains and trees.  I recently stumbled on Julia's blog which inspired me to use just pieces of these big Sizzix die sets - see this card but there are so many others!  So my card isn't a "snowglobe", it's just a rustic mountain scene.

Something fun about this die set is that the mountains and trees are scored down the middle so you can add dimension. I popped the mountain with thicker pieces of dimensional tape down the middle and the tree with thinner pieces (although there are so many other things on top of the tree, it's hard to tell it's popped.

Freshly Made Sketches: You Got This

It's time for a new sketch at Freshly Made Sketches! Today we have a sketch by Jacquie and here’s what I did with it!

I turned the ovals and circles into mountains and a moose!

That smug look on his face led me to the sentiment.  This is a good one to have in my stash because surely at some point, one of my sons will have a "you got this" moment.  Plus moose are meaningful to us. The mountain church camp that we spent time at as a family and they went with youth groups often had moose sightings.  I just looked it up and there are only an estimated 2,000 moose in Colorado so it was a big deal.

The dies are from Poppystamps.  The moose and trees are from their "whittle" collection that I've used a number of times lately.  I think the whittles have been around but I only recently discovered them.  I think they are just perfect for my sons in their early 20s because the animals are cute but not cutesy. There are also a number of stamp sets to go with the animals including a variety of sentiments from sweet to snarky - but go figure, the only set I don't have is the one with the "moose" sentiment!
