Freshly Made Sketches: Life Can Be Tough

It's time for a new sketch at Freshly Made Sketches! Today we have a sketch by Cindy Hall.

When I sat down a few days ago to make this, I knew that I needed words of encouragement for my oldest.  As a new high school graduate, he's starting to get a dose of the real world and it's really got him down.  Does anybody remember that moment when you realized that many people really don't care about their jobs or about the people around them?  I kind of hate to destroy his outlook and tell him to get used to it, but life IS tough and it's not always fair.

I had purchased this sentiment set with this situation in mind.  I knew at some point, he'd be caught off guard by real life.

Life Can Be Tough

It's so hard to make for teenage boys.  I put heart and soul into his graduation card.  I bought a sentiment set with just the right sentiment that I thought would speak to him and guide him through the next few years.  That card is still crumpled and muddy on the floor of the car.  On the other hand, I know he has a plastic box in the drawer next to his bed, and I know it includes a variety of cards that I and others have given him over the years.   I'll let you know where this card ends up!!

FYI - I can't believe I hadn't used the Stampin' Up Perpetual Birthday Calendar set yet.  I didn't get it for calendar purposes, I got it for the little sprinkles.  I don't think this picture does it justice - but these sprinkles look so dimensional when randomly stamped with lighter and darker colors.

Be sure to check out the inspiration from the rest of the design team at the FMS challenge blog. Also check out Cindy at Pretty Impact - you'll love her work!

  1. Wonderful sentiment......and oh so true! Love the strip of patterned paper and the sprinkled stars! I cried all the way, home after dropping my daughter off at college......but four years later I didn't shed a tear dropping off #2....... funny how that works!

  2. Oh Kim! I am sorry that your son is having such a hard time. My daughter is 14 and she already says she is not really in a hurry to grow up. I guess sometimes I am too honest about life being tough and that sometimes you have to do a job you don't love to get by in the world. Life is not EASY but it is what YOU make of it. I tell her to try to pick one positive each day, even if it was crummy in general.

I LOVE your card. You are right-that SU! stamp is so cool. I want it now!! Love how you stamped it in the gray. That sentiment is fabulous too. Here is hoping that your son finds people that are able to show a positive influence on his career.

  4. Perfect card for a young man! And the sentiment is a great message. I take back the cards I give to my sons and put them away for them - because I know if I don't, they sure as heck won't!

  5. FAB card...and I know what you mean...it's sad when they have to grow up and see the cynical world as it is...and it's a hard age too!

  6. I think your card is perfect for your son, Kim. I remember those days with our son and how I felt as he struggled at times with the 'realness' of life. Having you there for him - knowing that you are always there for him - is the best armor he has going forward!! Hugs, Darnell

  7. I remember it well when, as a teenager at my first job, I saw a co-worker (not much older than me) disparage the BOSS! I could not believe what I was hearing and sadly 30+ years later I've heard the same sort of thing many times since. Your words of encouragement are just the thing to let your son know that he can be strong as he navigates his way through adulthood! And P.S. I'm loving this card. The way this sentiment stands out is fantastic!

  8. Great sentiment can card. You are a good mom :) Keep pouring into him and he will one day look back and thank you for how you stood by him, taught him and encouraged him.

  12. I'm feeling for your son as the 'realness' of the world reveals itself to him and yes, sadly, not all of it is pretty. With you and your husband to anchor him, however, he will find all the encouragement and support he needs to guide him along his path. He'll be okay; this I believe! I'm feeling the same 'concern' for my niece; even at age 5 some of life's truths are beginning to make their appearance. Your card couldn't be any more perfect to offer him hope. His resilience will see him go far...
