Freshly Made Sketches: A Little Mower

It's time for a new sketch at Freshly Made Sketches! Today we have a sketch by Jen Timko.

Sometimes I start with stamps or dies and force them into a sketch, but in this case, the sketch totally inspired my card.  A little backstory first...

I live on 5 acres on the prairie outside of Denver.  There's probably only a half acre or so that we mow and, of that half acre, only a small front lawn gets mowed more than once or twice a year.  But when we first purchased the house, it all seemed so big that we had to have a riding lawn mower! That lawn mower lasted for over 20 years, but this year we decided it just wasn't going to make it another year.  In the meantime, we realized that there's actually very little lawn to mow so we replaced it a small little mower, just like on my card.

This year rolls around and we are having the wettest spring in memory - which means the grass is growing and growing, but it's rarely dry enough to mow.  Now we are faced with grass that is just too long for the little mower!  Luckily, we have a teenage son who has decided he will die if he doesn't have a new skateboard yesterday.  So guess what he is doing to earn enough money - he is outside with a weed whacker(!) trying to get the grass short enough for the lawnmower.  Picture it - 5 acres, vast open sky, young teenager on the horizon trying to make a dent in the long, waving grass.

I saw the sketch and instantly saw that all of that open area and the teeny tiny lawn mower!! This will be the Father's Day card from the teenager.  Of course, at the moment, he is definitely not saying "love you more"!  He is definitely hating life.

Hope to see you playing along.  This sketch is definitely an open canvas with so many possibilities!

  4. Oh my gosh! I laughed and laughed...it echoed my boys and raking billions and billions of leaves on our property years ago! One said, "I know why you had kids, mom. Because it's free labor!" And what a fun card! Great for Father's Day, or Valentine's Day, or even a no-reason-at-all day. Really a fun card. Really a funny story! Bev

  12. What a great background story and talk about perseverance! He must really want that skateboard! Years ago, my brother wanted a 'must have' pair of running shoes, which I bought for him, with the full discussion of how he'd pay me back. He didn't have a job, so cash was out of the question. I did, however, have my house cleaned every Friday, for 8 wonderful weeks! I think I 'primed' him for his future wife *grin* Love your little mower card...

  13. That mental picture of you guys fending off the grass with the little mower makes me smile, for some reason. I guess it is more challenging now, what with the rainy weather and all, but at least it’ll get your son up and about, and quite busy with that bushwhacker. Anyway, I hope he finishes soon, before the grass starts growing around him. Haha!
